1. To identify problems and issues relating to medical and health care needs, goals, policies and objectives.

2. To organize and promote scientific research in various fields of medicine, public health, reproductive health and nutrition with specific references to primary health care needs.

3. To initiate, assist, promote and co-ordinate scientific research in the field of health in medical institutions and to help such institutions in developing expertise and facilities for health research.

4. To train manpower in health research through workshops/training programmes.

5. To organize and disseminate research information through publications, research seminars, workshops and orientation courses.

6. To arrange for the application and utilization of the results of health research.
